This is my own way to understand this philosophy

    THE PHILOSOPHY
Porsche represents far more than just an unmistakable trade name. It’s maximun exponent is the 911. Porsche is fascination. The 911 not only promises a world of experience. The myth becomes reality. Only then you can feel the power that is unique to Porsche – both active and attractive. The brand thus embodies the epitome of sporty driving and thinking. That is a real philosophy for us, the 911 lovers, pure Porsche, pure 911. When you've had the chance to see a nine-eleven for the first time, it probably changes your way of thinking about cars. The 911 is not a simply sport car, it's the myth 911. The longing to possess a 911 could become to transform into an obsession, or a 'beautiful' chronic disease... When you are seated at the commands of a 911 and you'd switch the engine on, you'll know that there is something different. It's characteristic flat-six engine sound is telling to us that we are in a real sport car. The '911 personality', is caused by the rear engine configuration. If you want to extract the most from the car, just driving it wouldn't be enough, you'll have to ride it as a pilot. The 911-concept has been enchanting all the Porsche 911 lovers far more than 40 years, and it's really alive more than never been thought before. Its uncomparable silhouette is another one of the 911 concept's elements. There are no similitudes to any other sporty car. 911 owners don't enjoy just driving it. They have fun contemplating the car after parked indeed. In fact we are talking about a mental sickness... a chronic desease. Imagine a sunny Sunday morning, an unfrequented road mountain, both the 911 and you... It's harmony, pleasure, symbiosis, everytime closer to eden, the nirvana of senses. The fascinating sense enkindled by the myth is over the good and evil, and even the love to sport cars. It's probably something that nobody could define and the 911 drivers reach to feel when the car is being driven. Am I crazy about the nine eleven? May be, ... But God bless Ferry Porsche.

I agreed with you, until you drive a nine eleven, you don´t know whats the meaning of the pleasure. You think that you can guess what is the feeling but everything turns different when you drive one, you are infected by the 911 virus.

One of the things that get you crazy is the engine sound. The sound of the nine eleven, particularly the air cooled is great, it's a deep sound, not as sharp as a Ferrari, but a sound with a great personality. When the car is idle his sound is like a million bubbles just in the back. I love this sound. This is why most of the time the hifi is off.

Another thing is it's style. It's impossible to let him away without a last sight.

You can drive him hard or get him to go for a relax ride, it's indifferent, the pleasure of driving a nine eleven is all you can need.

It's impossible to describe the emotion of driving a nine eleven. When you are driving one there are only three things:
    1. The nine eleven
    2. The road
    3. You

    Guys :[amen] ,

I agree with you in every sentence. When I drove first time a 911 I was stunned by the precise steering, handling and braking. You really can feel all the details of the road via steering wheel, also I love the looks and the raw sound of air cooled flat six.
Today again I drove my Carrera to work and I keep noticing that I automatically select the longest route with less traffic to work just because I so much love driving my 20-years-old 911.

My friend has 996 with sport exhaust and it sounds very good too but it's missing the rawness of air cooled flat-6. In my previos 911 SC I had really loud pipes and now I'm running stock exhaust, hopefully during the Autumn I'm able to fix this "issue".

I think Porsche is more than the 911, although many people don't think so.

For example, the 928 was far more advanced than the 911 of that era, and nobody seems to remember.... The 951 was very able to go faster than the 3.2 carrera, the 928 was as powerful as the 930, but easier to drive. Around 30% of the Porsche sold were 928/924/944/968, a respectable amount to be forgotten.

This doesn't mean that the 911 is not a great car, but it's only one of the Porsche models, not the only one.

    Mig17,
you are right that Porsche has made many great other automobiles than just 911. I just fell in love for 911 when I was 7 years old on holiday trip in Italy in ´84 when I got this Burrago 911 Carrera 3,2 scale model. I´m Finnish myself and in our forum there www.9xxfin.com majority of enthusiasts are driving 944 turbos. One reason is very high car taxation over there and the other is value for money. It is so easy to get 350 hp out from those babies and when upgrading the brakes and suspension, you get a very quick car. Some of the guys went to Nordschleife 2 weeks ago and they lapped in just over 8 minutes BtG.
I would like to own one of those too but now I just don´t have space for and cash for it. It will be even more valued car in future, same will happen and is already happening to 968 CS and 928 GT. But when I have to select just one, I go for 911 with 70% of other Porsche enthusiasts.

In my reckoning the word "Porsche" means a lot more than a car manufacturer. It is a dream, a step forward in one's life, a goal that I have been aiming to for a long time... I may be biased, due to my own circumstances, and, therefore, I cannot expect you to understand what Porsche cars mean to me. Nevertheless, this dream is getting closer, I can even hear my long-awaited Boxster's humming...

For those of you who do not know what I mean, let me tell you one thing. I have been cramming for years to become a diplomat. Eventually, I am on the brink of achieving my dream. I have been very close to it, but I haven't obtained it yet. As soon as I overcome current year's last obstacles, my life will radically change. Getting a Porsche car is, hence, linked to many other events that I have been waiting for for a long time, such as getting married to my uncomplaining fiancée or buying a new flat. In other words, a step forward in my life...

That is the reason why, in my opinion, Porsche is more than a sports car.

After this "unsmokable brick" (as Lopez Socasau would write in his "From Lost To The River" book), you know a bit more about me now, and what Porsche's philosophy means to me....

    Greetings!

Is the 911 the best Porsche?
If you can afford the 997, then, yes it is the best Porsche, otherwise maybe not...

911 is the synonym to Porsche as it has been in production almost half the century. It is defenitely the best sports car of last century. But 911 is not flawless.

In the end of the 1980's, the 944 Turbo was a better car than the 911 Carrera. It was quicker and it handled much, much better (the 944 was the best handling car in the world). But not everyone is looking for the performance. Most of the buyers don't consider the performance (power, handling and brakes) so important. They chose the 911 because of its engine sound and it's unmistakable design – no other car on the planet looks like a 911. They didn't care that the trunk was in a size of a big man's pocket and that the heating system was designed when the fire was invented. The 944 Turbo was certainly a much better car than the 911 Carrera, but people never buy the best products, they follow their hearts and that is not wrong.

For me the most important thing about the sports car is what makes it a „sports“ car – the performance, the best performance your wallet can afford.

In last 20 years Porsche hasn't made better cars than 911, so it is perfectly understandable that for most of the people the ultimate Porsche is the 911.

For the people, who care about the performance and who cannot afford the 996 Turbo, a 944 Turbo is still on the buying list together with different generations of the 911 Carreras, just because in one full day you can make enough modifcations to the 951 to outperform any 911 Carrera before the 997 generation. And the engine will not explode like it will with the 996 Carrera.

928? It is not a sportscar, but a GT cruiser. I have owned the 4.4L 928 and the 5.4L GTS and I didn't like either of them. I did like the engine sound, but that didn't make the car quicker on the race track, so what's the point...

968? It is just a 944 S3, so a good car, but not worth writing here a long story about it. 944S2 and Turbo are more durable cars.

Cayman has only 2 seats, so it is not a car for a person who has friends. Or family. I have both.

    Porsche Cabriolet

When choosing a Porsche Cabriolet, the story is a little bit different, but not so much. I mean the first beautiful 911 Cabrio was the 996 Cabrio as the soft top shape on the older models was quite ugly and when the top was down, then the windscreen looked too much straight up (like BMW E30 cabrio – not beautiful). As the 996 Cabrios had the major engine problems, the first 911 Cabrio to buy, would be the 997 Cabrio (although I think the 997 3.6 has basically the 996 3.6 engine but I haven't fortunately heard about the engine problems yet).

What Porsche Cabriolet to buy then, if you cannot afford the 997 Cabrio? Boxster has 2 seats and the 986 cars have exploding engines. And the performance of the non-S Boxsters is a real joke. I have never understood what Porsche thought when the made the 986 Boxster. The entry-level Porsche used to be a 3.0-litre 240 hp 968 with 6-speed gearbox and the next entry-level Porsche was a 2.5-litre 204 hp Boxster with 5-speed gearbox. Awful...
968 Cabriolet or 944 Cabriolet? Both are very good cars, but for me the 944 Cabriolet looks better (it was the best-looking cabrio in the world at the time of production). 944 S2 and Turbo are a little bit more reliable, too. I don't think it is because they were made in Audi factory, but who knows... I have felt the Audi-produced 944's always had slightly higher quality than the 911's and 968's produced in Stuttgart.

My conclusion: 944 can be a very good car if it is a 951 and 911 can be a very bad car if it is a 996 Carrera.

So, the one who says that the 911 is the best Porsche, doesn't know Porsches. (I have owned 14 Porsches and sold approx. 100 Porsches)

After you have had in my life countless cars of various makes and models, Porsche is one of the two brands that I have created an addiction, really is not the brands that used for travel or for everyday use, but to enjoy the fact of possessing.
Enjoy having a Porsche, you know that you own a value just by looking to spend time caring fills you with satisfaction.
It is a vehicle with a strong sports character, the car itself conveys a feeling of power and security and in turn transmits sportiness and elegance, values that are sometimes not compatible, but if you live Porsche.
I recently sold my porsche, quickly bought another, I doubt stay again without my porsche if not to replace it.
    Greetings to everyone.

If you want different results, do not do the same thing
