This is a thread about the very problematic wet-sump 986 Boxster and 996 Carrera engines and not about the problem-free dry sump 996 GT3, Turbo and GT2 old school motors. The engine code starts with M96 for all of them.

    Big problems:
    M96.01,02,04 - 996 Carrera 3.4
    M96.03 - 996 Carrera 3.6
    M96.20 - 986 2.5
    M96.21,24 - 986 S 3.2
    M96.22,23 - 986 2.7

    No problems:
    M96.70 - 996 Turbo & GT2
    M96.76 - 996 GT3 mk1 360 hp
    M96.79 - 996 GT3 mk2 381 hp

My 986 2.5 engine broke 2 times (at 70.000 km something happened to one head and at 110.000 km came the total engine crash, which we are starting to talk in this thread. The wet-sump engines have oil starvation problems and they crash sooner or later. And they crash totally, so you have to buy a new engine. I know personally 5 996 Carreras with crashed engines:
    996 3.4 @ 110.000 km
    996 3.4 @ 100.000 km
    996 3.4 @ 42.000 km
    996 3.6 @ 48.000 km
    996 3.6 @ 60.000 km
    +my ex-986 2.5 @ 110.000 km
If you search for a 9x6 in www.mobile.de then you see many ads with "ATM" or "Auschtauchmotor" which means the engine is changed.

People wonder how can a 911 Carrera be so cheap... Porsche enthusiasts keep away from 996's, so there are not too many people left who would want them.

I have had my expensive lessons with the Boxster and I will never return to 986 - the 968 Cabriolet is much better car and the 944 Cabriolet is much-much better product. And they are quicker cars, too. And as I am a person with friends, so the 4-seater is the right car.
